The basis of health and safety law is The Health and Safety at Work etc. Act 1974 (HSWA 1974). This places a number of general duties on people to ensure that work activities are carried out without risk to those doing them or anyone who may affected by them. This is an enabling Act, which means that a number of regulations have been put into place beneath this which deal with specific requirements of health and safety.
The most commonly referred to set of regulations are the Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations 1999 (MHSWR 1999). These place a number of specific duties on employers and employees for risk management in the workplace.
