The basis of health and safety law is The Health and Safety at Work etc. Act 1974 (HSWA 1974). This imposes a number of general duties on people to ensure that work activities are carried out without risk to those doing them or anyone who may affected by them. It is an enabling Act, which means that a number of regulations stem from it, dealing with the specific requirements of various aspects of health and safety.
The most commonly referred to set of regulations are the Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations 1999 (MHSWR 1999). They place a number of specific duties on employers and employees for risk management in the workplace.
