COSHH Essentials e-tool launched

The HSE has developed an e-tool for the management of hazardous substances in the workplace. What does it do and is it worth checking out?

The HSE has launched an e-tool that can be used to assess the risks from the use of hazardous substances. It requires you to enter basic information that can be found on the safety data sheet provided with the substance. The e-tool will then direct you to an advice sheet that will detail how the use of the substance should be managed, the risks presented by it and what workers need to know about the substance before it is used in the workplace.

In addition, there is also a batch of direct advice sheets that provide generic information on tasks that involve the use of hazardous substances such as bricklaying, welding and printing. Plus there's a FAQ section accompanying the e-tool which answers the most common questions surrounding the use of hazardous substances. To access the e-tool visit

The use of this e-tool will provide employers with the additional information they need to make sure that their assessments are suitable and sufficient and so that appropriate control measures can be implemented. We reckon it's definitely worth a look.
